The recipe is the plan. Everything else follows from it.

Write the recipe once — lines, wastage, overhead, how a run should round — and planning, costing, consumption and the output lot all come from it. No separate spreadsheet of what a batch needs.

Reverse is drawn as the exception it is: it undoes the postings only while the output lot is untouched, and puts every consumed component back.

Recipe management

A recipe is the master record. It is versioned, it is costed as you type, and the settings on it decide how planning behaves — so there is one place to change your mind.

A recipe, or a repack kit

A recipe turns components into a product. A kit repacks one product into another pack size. Same lines, same costing, same lot handling — the type just says which.

Wastage per line

Each line carries its own wastage percentage, and the run consumes the extra. Flour at two per cent and levain at five are different facts, so they are held separately.

Costed as you type

Component costs sum, overhead goes on top, and the estimated unit cost updates while you edit — $1.09 a loaf on the recipe above. The server posts the real one when the run completes.

Versioned

Editing a recipe bumps its version, and a production order pins the version it was raised from. Last month’s runs still show last month’s recipe.

QC hold at birth

Mark a recipe QC-hold-required and its output lot is born Held. FEFO picking skips it until somebody releases it, so an untested batch cannot leave on a van.

Buffer and rounding

A safety buffer adds a percentage on top of demand. Batch rounding says whether a suggested run rounds up to whole batches, half batches, or the exact quantity.

Production planning that nets demand

Pick a date and a fixed warehouse. The workbench nets open orders and reorder points against what is on hand, and suggests what to make and what to buy.

The top row is the recipe above doing its job: 65 loaves pegged to two orders, plus its 10% buffer, rounded up to whole batches of 40 makes 80.
Make, or buyA product with an active default recipe is suggested as a run. One without is suggested as a purchase from its preferred vendor. Same screen, same date.
Pegged to real ordersEach demand row shows the sales orders driving it, so a suggestion can be traced back to the customers who caused it.

Produced against planned gives the yield. Each consumption line either names the batch it came from or falls to FEFO, and the output lot is posted on hold.
Yield, every runEnter what was produced and the yield is worked out against the plan — 95% above — so a recipe that consistently under-delivers shows up in the numbers.
Batch-tracked in, batch-tracked outA tracked component is consumed from a named batch with its expiry; an untracked one falls to FEFO. The output lot records both, so a recall runs in either direction.
Undo, while you still canReverse a completed run and the output lot is removed and every consumed component is returned to stock — but only while nothing has touched that lot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a recipe and a kit?
A recipe makes a product from components — flour, levain, salt and oil into a loaf. A repack kit turns one product into another pack size — loose rolls into a bag of six. Both carry lines, wastage, overhead and lot handling; the type tells planning and the warehouse which kind of run it is.
Can a draft recipe have no lines?
Yes. A draft can be saved with just its header while you work it out. It has to have at least one line before it can be made active, and only an active recipe can be the default planning uses.
How does planning decide whether to make or buy?
If the product has an active default recipe, the workbench suggests a run. If it does not, it suggests a purchase from the product’s preferred vendor. Both appear on the same screen for the same date, so the plan for a day is one list.
Where does the demand come from?
Open sales orders for the date, netted against a fixed warehouse — never a van or truck — plus any product that has fallen below its reorder point. Each demand row shows the orders pegged to it.
What happens if I create a draft order from a suggestion?
The draft nets against the demand immediately, so the suggestion shrinks or disappears the next time the workbench is read. Nothing on the workbench is stored; it is computed live every time.
Does a run consume stock when it starts?
No. Starting moves the order to in progress. Consumption and the output lot are posted when the run is completed, against the quantity actually produced.
What is QC hold?
A recipe can require it. The output lot is then born held: it exists in stock but FEFO picking skips it, so it cannot be loaded or sold until someone releases the hold.
Can I undo a completed run?
Yes, while the output lot is untouched. Reversing removes the lot and returns every consumed component to stock, and it needs a specific permission. Once anything has picked from the lot, it can no longer be reversed.
Are components tracked by batch?
Where the component is batch-tracked, yes — the consumption line names the batch and its expiry. Where it is not, the line falls to FEFO. Either way the output lot records what went into it.
